How It Started
It started with a dream between a cowboy and a city girl who wanted to serve others.
Ryan and Itezelle Miller came from different worlds, but they shared a belief that the things they had been given, their experiences, talents, faith, and even the challenges they had faced, could be used in service to others.
As they built Miller + Magnolia together, community naturally became part of the story. Around mahjong tables, through personal connection, and in the simple act of gathering people together, they saw how friendship and fellowship could become something more: an opportunity to give, encourage, support, and serve.
That dream became The Shield & Hearth Foundation, a dedicated charitable arm where generosity could have a home and where bringing people together could become a way of giving back.

The Shield & Hearth Foundation is the charitable arm of Miller + Magnolia, rooted in faith and guided by a heart for community. Through charitable giving, fundraising events, education, community gatherings, and partnerships with local organizations, we seek to create meaningful opportunities to serve others while strengthening the relationships that bring communities together.
Our work is intentionally broad. We believe service begins by paying attention to the needs around us. From veterans and women rebuilding their lives to foster families, community organizations, educational opportunities, and neighbors who simply need support, Shield & Hearth exists to meet people with dignity, compassion, and generosity.
Our name tells our story. The shield (Ryan) represents protection, courage, service, and standing beside others. The hearth (Itezelle) represents warmth, hospitality, fellowship, and a place where people can gather and know they belong.
Together, they represent the community we hope to help build: one that protects, welcomes, gathers, and gives.
The Shield & Hearth Foundation currently operates as the charitable arm of Miller + Magnolia. Formal nonprofit formation and application for recognition as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization are planned for January 2027. Until tax-exempt status is obtained, contributions should not be represented as tax-deductible charitable donations.

Shield & Hearth is supported through fundraising events, event proceeds, sponsorships, in-kind contributions, and the generosity of individuals and businesses who choose to support our initiatives.
Funds raised for charitable initiatives are designated for the stated purpose of the event or campaign, including associated charitable-program expenses and distributions to the selected beneficiary or cause.
As Shield & Hearth develops toward independent nonprofit status, we are committed to responsible financial stewardship, clear recordkeeping, and transparency about how charitable funds are raised and used.

We welcome partnerships with businesses, community organizations, and individuals who share our commitment to service and strengthening our community.
Partnerships may include in-kind donations, silent-auction items, event sponsorships, goods or services, educational programming, event collaboration, volunteer involvement, or support for a specific charitable initiative.
Because Shield & Hearth is not yet a recognized 501(c)(3), we are transparent about our current status when requesting support. We do not represent contributions as tax-deductible charitable gifts. Businesses should consult their own tax professional regarding the treatment of sponsorships, promotional expenses, or other contributions.

Our work is intentionally community-centered rather than limited to a single cause. We are particularly passionate about supporting veterans and military communities, women rebuilding their lives, foster children and families, education and accessible community programming, and local organizations responding to meaningful needs.
Individual events and campaigns may benefit a specific organization, population, or community need. Whenever possible, we clearly identify the purpose and intended beneficiary of an initiative so our supporters understand what their participation is helping accomplish.
At its heart, Shield & Hearth is guided by a simple idea: the shield protects, the hearth welcomes—and there should always be room to serve another.

We choose charitable partners based on how closely their work aligns with the mission and values of The Shield & Hearth Foundation, the needs of the communities we serve, and the purpose of each individual event or initiative. We also consider an organization's reputation, community impact, and how the funds or resources raised will be used.
During our current formative stage, Shield & Hearth does not yet have a formal Board of Directors. Charitable beneficiaries are therefore selected jointly by Itezelle Miller, President, and Ryan Miller, Director of Finance. Whenever possible, we communicate the selected beneficiary or intended cause before an event so participants and supporters understand where their support is being directed.
As Shield & Hearth moves toward formal nonprofit formation and its planned 501(c)(3) application in January 2027, beneficiary selection and charitable distributions will transition to the governance and approval procedures established by the Foundation's Board of Directors.
Our goal is simple: to give thoughtfully, responsibly, and where we believe our community can make a meaningful difference.
